This course is designed to help advanced literature and composition students develop their analytical and rhetorical skills as readers and writers. Students will work to create evidence-based, argumentative essays through several draft stages, evaluating, synthesizing, and citing research to support their arguments. Students will also begin to develop a personal style as writers by understanding and making purposeful grammatical choices. We’ll do this by writing — A LOT — and also by reading and analyzing non-fiction tests (including graphic texts) from many periods and disciplines. This course will also prepare you to take the AP English Language and Composition exam.

AP courses are designed to align with the work students would do in an introductory college-level course. It is a challenging course with a rigorous syllabus and high expectations for student work. It is ideal for students who excel in language arts classes and want to push themselves to do even better. You should not take this course if you generally do not enjoy Language Arts classes and do not want to spend substantial time outside of class working on assignments for this course.

AP English Language and Composition is free for enrolled students at the Academy and will stand in for one of your required Literature requirements for the year; see Amy or Shelly to coordinate your class schedule to include AP English Language and Composition. Enrolled students must get permission from Amy or Shelly to take this course.

The Academy is not an AP test site, but we’re happy to work with you to locate a test site so that you can sit the exam in the spring. Please contact Amy if you need more information about AP course approval.
