Are you ready for summer reading? In this class we'll explore the magical world of Nnedi Okorafor's Akata Witch: After her family moves back to Nigeria, 12-year-old American-born Sunny discovers that she has special powers. She is one of the Leopard People, and her newly-found heritage opens up exciting new possibilities but also comes with some big responsibilities--including, perhaps, saving the world. Akata Witch is wonderful for readers who are looking for more diversity in their fiction, for Harry Potter fans who are always searching for the next book, and for anyone who enjoys a great adventure story. We'll read and discuss Akata Witch together and finish out our summer reading with a final project that will allow students to dive deeper into Sunny's world. This is a middle school literature class.
